Why this fits your profile
A tablespoon of regular BBQ sauce can carry as much added sugar as a cookie. Building your own means the sweet-smoky flavor you actually want doesn't come with the blood sugar swing — useful on the nights you're leaning on a protein-forward sheet pan dinner and don't want the sauce undoing the rest of the plate.
Ingredients
- 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
- ½ cup water
- ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp low-sugar or sugar-free Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp allulose or monk fruit sweetener
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- Pinch cayenne (optional)
Directions
Step 1
Whisk all ingredients together in a small saucepan.
Step 2
Simmer over low heat 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
Step 3
Cool and store refrigerated up to 2 weeks.
Smart swaps
- Add 1 tsp liquid smoke for a deeper smoky flavor
- Use as a glaze on chicken thighs or a sheet pan the last 5 minutes of baking
- Thin with a splash of water if using as a marinade
Best time to use
Chicken Veggie Sheet Pan, Turkey Meatball Veggie Bowl
